PLAYER OF THE DAY

Pablo Sandoval (MLB) is a third baseman for the San Francisco Giants, though if it were up to him, he’d play all nine positionsSandoval, or “Kung Fu Panda” as he’s better known, showcased his all-around game on Monday — hitting a home run, stealing a base AND pitching a scoreless inning, despite a 12-4 loss vs. the Cincinnati Reds. The only player to ever achieve this feat prior was Christy Mathewson in 1905. Matthewson, a Giants player renowned for his versatility, tossed nine scoreless innings, homered, and stole a base. It’s been a while. Somehow, that performance was also by a Giants player against the Reds…

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Too crazy to bee-lieve
This pun better be worth it…
(MLB) If you thought the Reds-Giants historical parallels above were strange, try this. On Monday, the game was delayed by a swarm of bees; players and fans had to wait 18 minutes until the bees ushered their way up to the upper deck. Reds super-utility-man Derek Dietrich had a little fun with it all, dressing in exterminator garb to ward off yet another instance of bees attacking MLB games. I thought the game was beer baseball, but we may want to change it to bee baseball with the way things are playing out these days…

What makes it even more strange, is that this exact thing happened 43 years ago in Cincinnati between the Reds and Giants, with a delay lasting 35 minutes. The Reds won that game, though, so maybe Dietrich shoulda left ’em alone.

Bucks bury Celts; Rockets get even with Warriors
More NBA playoff news, eh?
(NBA) Things are finally starting to heat up in the NBA playoffs.

One night after the Nuggets and Raptors evened up their series’, the Houston Rockets held serve at home to tie their series. Kevin Durant and Steph Curry had monster performances for the Golden State Warriors, scoring 34 and 30 points respectively, but MVP candidate James Harden could not be stopped. Even with one eye looking like it’s gonna burst at any moment, he managed 38 points and 10 rebounds. They will head back to the bay for Game 5.

Harden’s big night leads Houston to a series-tying win in game 4

Speaking of MVP candidates, Giannis Antetokounmpo played like the freak he is with 39 points and 16 rebounds as the Milwaukee Bucks cruised to a road win over the Boston Celtics and seized a commanding 3-1 lead in the series. Celtics star Kyrie Irving laid an egg in what could be his final home game in Boston if he bolts this summer as a free agent — and the rumors are already swirling

Can Anyone Stop This Man??? Sheesh…

Bruins eliminate Blue Jackets; Avs force Game 7
It’s hockey’s turn
(NHL)
Even with the Celtics loss, Boston fans have something to be excited about today. The Bruins cruised past the Columbus Blue Jackets in Game 6 to clinch the second-round series. The Blue Jackets had 39 shots, but Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask could not be beat. John Tortorella broke his promise, but you can’t win ’em all. The Bruins will face the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Tuukka Rask is an impenetrable force!

Things are less set in stone on the West. The Colorado Avalanche were down 3-2 and faced elimination in their series against the San Jose SharksGabriel Landeskog (best not to try to pronounce this one) is a left-winger for the Avs, and we found out last night that he may also have psychic powers. Before the game, he said that the key to a win was to score the first goal, and they did just that. They were up 3-2 before the Sharks tied the game with less than 3 minutes left in the third period. Landeskog was on the ice for that goal and blamed him and his line-mates. He vowed to goalie, Philipp Grubauer, that he would score in overtime to make up for it, and he did just that. Sharks captain, Joe Pavelsi, did not return for Game 6, but he expected to play in Game 7, adding to the excitement.

There is a Game 7 on the docket tonight, too, with the Stars facing the Blues at 8pm EST. The winner of this Game 7 will play the winner of the Avs-Sharks Game 7. Let’s see who will be the “Mr. Game 7” of the West…

Here’s Colorado’s game-winning goal in OT to force Game 7

Ducks double down as 3×3 champs
College Basketball is back already?
(NCAA) Not quite. But remember Oregon Ducks Women’s Basketball star Sabrina Ionescu? Who strung together like a million triple-doubles and then called out ESPN for not covering it? Well, she pulled off another noteworthy “3”-feat on Monday, leading the Ducks to the USA Women’s 3×3 National Championship for the second-straight year.

It wasn’t as easy as last year, when Ionescu and her teammates cruised to a resounding 21-5 championship win. This year took a late comeback capped off by Ionescu’s free throw with 13.9 seconds in a 21-20 win. Naturally, the rising senior had 17 of her team’s 21 points. We’re not sure if there’s anything she can’t do. You should think about covering this one, ESPN.

ON THIS DAY

In 1994, the Denver Nuggets became the first No. 8 seed in NBA playoff history to upset a No. 1 seed, beating the heavily favored Seattle SuperSonics (RIP) in dramatic fashion. The Sonics won the first two games behind stars Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton, but Dikembe Mutombo and the Nuggets rallied back to force a winner-take-all game in Seattle (where the Sonics were a ridiculous 39-4 that year).

Home court advantage (sometimes) isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. The Nuggets forced overtime and pulled off a shocking 98-94 win — on the road — to complete the historic upset. It’s only happen four times since then, the latest coming when the top-seeded Chicago Bulls lost their MVP, Derrick Rose, due to injury in the first game of the playoffs. They joined the dubious club after losing to the Philadelphia 76ers in six games. Talk about adding insult to injury…
